JULY 2008

The police have had a report that someone tried to entice a ten year old girl into a vehicle in Sileby. Investigations are continuing, however, it is still important, as it is school holidays when young people are likely to be wondering around as individuals or with friends, to remind them that that they do not accept lifts from people (whether friends, relatives or strangers) unless proper arrangements have been made of which their parents or guardians are fully aware and are agreeable.

Motor bikes have been stolen in the Sileby / Mountsorrel area, and the early hours of the morning have been the times on some occasions. On one occasion, a Ford flat back R registered vehicle, with writing on one side, was in the vicinity at the time.

A catalytic converter has been stolen from a vehicle at Swithland Woods.

A member of the Charnwood Crime and Safety Forum has asked me to pass on his concerns, as during his working day, he is seeing windows left open on homes, when no one is in and also he has seen parked cars with the windows left open. He recognises that the owners are leaving themselves open to crime, and it may be questionable whether their insurance would accept responsibility if a property / vehicle has been left insecure.
In the hot weather it is tempting to do both, however good habits would discourage open windows.

Police Advice for Crime Free Summer…

Now summer is here, with the (hopefully) warmer weather please be extra vigilant with your home & personal security. Unfortunately the warmer weather also brings out criminals looking for that easy opportunity to commit crime, the open window or door or perhaps items left on display in car.

By taking a few simple steps we can all enjoy the benefits of summer.

If you are going on holiday make sure all windows & doors are secure and garages & sheds etc have good security locks. It always a good idea if you have an alarm on your property to ensure it is working correctly before you go away. If you don’t have a house alarm fitted please seriously consider having one fitted. Ensure any valuable items like laptops, MP3 players, mobile phones, jewellery etc are not left on view to people looking through windows and that any keys are hidden away & not left hanging up near doors.

Putting lights and radios on timers also will also give the impression someone is in the property.

If you have tall trees, shrubs or hedges that obscure the front of you home consider trimming them down a little so people at front of your house can be seen by neighbours.

Ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home ensuring any post is not left sticking out of letterboxes and be sure to cancel newspapers, milk deliveries and such like. Put dustbins in rear gardens so they cannot be used to climb over garden walls or fences.

Give a neighbour or nearby relative a key to your home so they can make sure everything is as it should be while you are away. And remember to give them a contact telephone number so you can be contacted if need be. This will give you extra peace of mind to enjoy your holiday.

Likewise if you are going out on a day trip again ensure your property is secure before you leave and think about where you are going. Do you really need to take all your credit cards with you? Do you really need the Sat Nav to get you there?

Remember - Anything that is not going to be needed should be left securely at home.

Even if you are at home in the garden do not leave doors or windows open if you are out of the room. Beware of anyone calling on you who you are not expecting. Never let anyone into your home unless you know who they are and why they have to be in your home - there is no such thing as the “Water Board” or “Gas Board”. If in doubt keep them out & call the Police.

Hopefully the above will have given you some food for thought about your home & personal security during the summer but if you need any further advice before going away or wish to speak with a local officer then please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Beat Officer Lynne Gilbertson on the contact details below.

Have a safe & enjoyable summer
